Shadica Garwood
MHC-I
I work with preteens ages 10+, adolescents, and adults navigating anxiety, trauma, emotional distress, identity concerns, and difficult life experiences. I understand that culture, family, immigration experiences, and a sense of belonging can influence emotional well-being and the way we understand ourselves.
As a Caribbean immigrant, I bring cultural humility and personal understanding to my work with individuals from diverse backgrounds. I provide trauma-informed, culturally responsive therapy where you can feel seen, respected, and supported while developing greater self-awareness, resilience, and emotional well-being.
Who I Support
I support:
Preteens ages 10+, adolescents, and adults navigating anxiety, trauma, stress, and emotional overwhelm
Caribbean and immigrant individuals seeking culturally responsive therapy
Individuals exploring identity, culture, belonging, and the impact of immigration experiences
Those processing difficult or traumatic experiences and their emotional impact
Individuals seeking to strengthen coping skills, resilience, and emotional awareness
Those looking for a supportive space to better understand themselves and their experiences
I especially enjoy supporting individuals experiencing anxiety or trauma, particularly those from Caribbean and immigrant backgrounds. I aim to provide a culturally responsive space where you can explore identity, better understand your emotional experiences, strengthen resilience, and work toward meaningful healing.
My Approach
My approach is integrative, client-centered, trauma-informed, and culturally responsive. I approach therapy with compassion, curiosity, cultural humility, and an understanding that your experiences, relationships, culture, and environment can all influence your emotional well-being.
I draw from:
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to help you understand connections between your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors and develop healthier ways of responding to anxiety and emotional distress.
Mindfulness-Based Strategies to strengthen awareness of your thoughts and emotions, support emotional regulation, and help you feel more grounded in the present.
Trauma-Informed Therapy to approach difficult experiences with attention to safety, trust, empowerment, and the ways trauma can affect emotional well-being and relationships.
I also incorporate psychoeducation to help you better understand anxiety, trauma, emotional responses, and coping strategies while developing practical tools that can support you outside of sessions.
Education & Professional Status
I am pursuing my Master of Arts in Mental Health Counseling & Wellness at New York University Steinhardt. I earned my Bachelor of Arts in Psychology & English from SUNY New Paltz in May 2024.
I practice under clinical supervision in accordance with New York State regulations. Ongoing supervision supports ethical, high-quality care and helps ensure you receive thoughtful, client-centered treatment while your privacy remains protected.
