Psychotherapist | New York
Eric James
MHC-LP
I work with couples and Black men who are navigating relationship challenges, identity and cultural concerns, and important periods of change. As an African American psychotherapist, I understand how culture, masculinity, lived experience, and the relationships we build can shape how we understand ourselves and connect with others.
My work is grounded in culturally responsive, collaborative care that creates space for honest reflection and meaningful growth. Whether I'm helping couples strengthen their relationships or supporting Black men in better understanding their relationships with themselves and others, my goal is to help clients develop greater insight, connection, and confidence in how they move forward.
Who I Support
I support:
Couples experiencing relationship distress, communication challenges, or recurring relational patterns
Couples considering marriage, cohabitation, starting a family, or other important relationship transitions
Couples seeking stronger communication, deeper connection, and a more equitable partnership
Black men exploring identity, culture, masculinity, relationships, and emotional well-being
Individuals navigating relationship concerns and the intersection of identity and culture
I especially enjoy working with couples who are considering deeper levels of commitment and want to strengthen their relationship before problems become more difficult to navigate. This may include preparing for marriage, moving in together, considering children, or entering another significant stage of the relationship.
My Approach
My approach is integrative, culturally responsive, and collaborative. I believe meaningful change often begins with developing a deeper understanding of the patterns, values, experiences, and relationships that influence how we relate to ourselves and others.
I draw from:
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to explore personal values and support meaningful, intentional action
Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (MB-CBT) to strengthen awareness of thoughts, emotions, and behavioral patterns
Existential Therapy to explore meaning, identity, values, responsibility, and choice
Liberation Psychology to consider how culture, identity, social experiences, and larger systems can influence emotional well-being
Gottman-informed approaches to help couples strengthen communication, connection, and relationship skills
Bowenian approaches to better understand family and relational patterns
Whether I'm providing individual therapy or couples counseling, I tailor our work to your goals and experiences. Together, we'll explore what's happening beneath recurring patterns, strengthen communication and emotional awareness, and develop practical ways of creating healthier, more intentional relationships.
Education & Professional Status
I earned my Master of Arts in Mental Health and Wellness Counseling from New York University and hold a Doctor of Philosophy in Neuroscience from Brown University.
I practice under clinical supervision in accordance with New York State regulations. Ongoing supervision supports ethical, high-quality care and helps ensure you receive thoughtful, client-centered treatment while your privacy remains protected.
Outside the Therapy Room
Outside of sessions, I enjoy weightlifting, running, cooking, and reading philosophy and history. I value time with my family and believe that reflection, physical movement, and curiosity play an important role in overall well-being.
